Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
This weekend, as we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time, our hearts remain filled with the gratitude following last weekend’s beautiful celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the patronal feast of our parish church. A sincere thank you is extended to everyone who helped make the celebration so joyful and memorable. Such occasions remind us that a parish is much more than a building: it is a family of faith, united around the altar of Christ, the Prince of Peace, and placed under the loving protection of our Blessed Mother.
This Sunday’s Gospel brings us to Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus asks His disciples one of the most important questions in all of Scripture: “Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter responds with his great profession of faith: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus then declares, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church,” entrusting to him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.
This passage has always held particular importance for Catholics. Christ did not leave His followers simply as isolated individuals, each trying to determine the faith for himself. He established a Church, gave Peter a unique responsibility within it, and promised that the powers of death would not prevail against it. The ministry entrusted to Peter continues in his successors, the popes, while the apostles’ ministry continues through the bishops in communion with him. Across the centuries, through periods of peace and persecution, holiness and human weakness, Christ has remained faithful to His promise to His church.
There is a beautiful connection between this Gospel and the patronal feast we celebrated last weekend. Mary is the perfect model of what it means to belong to Christ and to live within His church. Peter confessed with his lips, “You are the Christ” Mary confessed the same faith through her entire life, beginning with her humble response at Nazareth: “Let it be done to me according to your word.” Her Assumption into Heaven shows us where a life of faithful discipleship ultimately leads.
May Mary help us make Peter’s profession of faith our own–not merely with our words, but through the way we live each day.
