Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary

This weekend, our parish family, gathers with great joy to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the patronal feasts of our parish church. It is a day of thanksgiving as we honor the Mother of God and rejoice in the privilege of bearing her glorious title for our parish church building.

The Church teaches that at the end of her earthly life, the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. This dogma, solemnly proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950, expressed what Christians had believed and celebrated for centuries: that the one who was preserved from original sin and faithfully shared in the saving mission of her Son was granted the fullness of the Resurrection at the completion of her earthly pilgrimage.

The Assumption is much more than a feast honoring Mary. It is a celebration of the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death. In Mary, we see the fulfillment of God’s promise to all who remain faithful. Her Assumption reminds us that heaven is our true homeland and that we, too, are called to share one day in the glory of the Resurrection.

As we celebrate this patronal feast, we are invited to reflect on Mary’s virtues and to imitate her faithful response to God’s will. Her words at the Annunciation, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word,” remain the model of Christian discipleship. Throughout her life, Mary trusted God completely, even beneath the Cross, and now reigns with her Son as Queen of Heaven.

This weekend, we also, have the opportunity to give thanks for the many blessings God has bestowed upon our parish through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For generations, this church has been a place where the Eucharist is celebrated, children are baptized, couples exchange their marriage vows, sins are forgiven, and the faithful are strengthened in their journey toward eternal life. We remember with gratitude all those who have built up our current parish, as well as those who built our former parishes, through their faith, generosity, and sacrifice, and we pray that future generations will continue to find here a welcoming home where Christ is known, loved, and served.

May this celebration renew our love for our parish family and deepen our devotion to our heavenly Mother. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, assumed into heaven body and soul, may we grow in holiness, persevere in faith, and one day join her in the everlasting joy of God’s Kingdom.
