Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Fear is one of the most common human experiences. We worry about our health, our families, our finances, our future, and the uncertainties of life. In this Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 10:26-33), Jesus addresses this reality directly with a simple but powerful command: “Do not be afraid.”

Jesus speaks these words to His apostles as He prepares them to face opposition and persecution. He does not promise them an easy path. In fact, He warns them that following Him will sometimes be difficult. Yet three times in this short passage, the Lord tells them not to be afraid. Their confidence is not to be based on their own strength, but on the Father’s loving care.

To illustrate God’s providence, Jesus points to the sparrows, tiny birds of little value in the marketplace. Yet not one of them falls to the ground without the Father’s knowledge. Then He reminds His disciples that they are worth far more than many sparrows and that even the hairs of their heads are counted by God. Nothing in our lives escapes His loving attention.

The Gospel invites us to place our trust in God’s providence. While we may not understand every difficulty we encounter, we can be certain that God never abandons His people. He walks with us through every trial, every disappointment, and every uncertainty.

In a world often marked by anxiety and fear, Christians are called to be witnesses of hope. Our confidence comes not from favorable circumstances but from knowing that we belong to Christ. Through His death and resurrection, He has conquered sin and death and opened for us the path to eternal life.

As we continue through Ordinary Time, let us bring our fears to the Lord in prayer. May we hear His reassuring voice saying to each of us, “Do not be afraid,” and may we place our trust in the One who knows us, loves us, and never ceases to care for us.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus fill our hearts with peace, courage, and confidence in God’s unfailing love.
