Dear Parishioners,
The Parable in today’s Gospel is about losing and finding. Getting back something that we lost is always a great joy. We search eagerly until we find it. Jesus’s parables of the lost sheep, lost coin and the lost son are examples. Usually when we find something we lost, the trouble and pain involved in finding it is forgotten and joy fills our heart.
In the Parable, when the son who left home returns neither the Father of the boy nor the servants say anything negative about the son’s going away and wasting all the resources. considering it as a reality of life, they accept the boy’s return.
But his brother manifests another reality. He shows the orthodox or the fundamental view that does not allow any possibility for a different approach. His attitude is strongly condemned as it does not hold good.
Yes, the younger son took liberty, but when he realized that he made a mistake he repented and returned to his home. This is an attitude we should take as we live our lives.
The first reading tells us that after arriving in the Promised Land the people celebrated the Passover and stared to eat the local food because the manna ceased to fall. In the second reading, Paul informs the Corinthians that after having attained a new identity in Christ, they have become ambassadors of Christ.
It we want to preserve our lives, let us return to the Lord and be faithful to him through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
