Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of a king who prepares a magnificent wedding banquet for his son. Everything is ready, the invitations have been extended, and yet those originally invited refuse to come. Some are simply too occupied with their own affairs, while others respond with hostility. Undeterred, the king sends his servants into the streets to invite everyone they encounter, until the wedding hall is filled with guests.

The image of a wedding banquet is particularly beautiful because it reminds us that God does not invite us into a relationship of fear or mere obligation, but into the joy of His Kingdom. As the prophet Isaiah proclaims in today’s first reading, the Lord prepares a feast for all peoples, a place where suffering and death will ultimately be overcome and every tear wiped away.

Yet the Gospel also presents a challenge. Those who first received the invitation allowed their everyday concerns to become more important than the king’s generosity. How easily we can do the same! Our lives become filled with work, responsibilities, distractions, and personal ambitions, and God’s invitation is gradually pushed aside. We may believe in Him, but do we truly make room for Him?

The second part of the parable, concerning the guest who arrives without a wedding garment, reminds us that accepting God’s invitation also carries a responsibility. We cannot simply claim to belong to Christ without allowing His grace to transform the way we live. Our wedding garment must be reflected in our faith, charity, repentance, forgiveness, and willingness to follow the Gospel.

Every celebration of the Holy Eucharist offers us a beautiful foretaste of the heavenly banquet. We gather around the altar, not because we have earned His invitation, but because He loves us and desires to draw us closer to Himself. Rich and poor, young and old, strong and struggling, we are all called to share in the life of His Kingdom.

What keeps us from responding more fully to God’s invitation?
