19th. Sunday in Ordinary Time

In this Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 14:22-33), the disciples find themselves battling strong winds and rough seas as they struggle to cross the Sea of Galilee. During the darkest hours of the night, Jesus comes to them, walking on the water. At first they are terrified, believing they are seeing a ghost. But Jesus immediately reassures them: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Peter, with his characteristic boldness, asks Jesus to command him to come across the water. As long as Peter keeps his eyes fixed on Christ, he walks safely above the waves. But when he notices the strength of the wind, fear overwhelmed him, and he begins to sink. Crying out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reaches out His Hand and lifts him up.

How often this scene mirrors our own lives. We all experience storms in the form of illness, grief, financial worries, family struggles, uncertainty about the future, or the many anxieties that accompany daily life. Like Peter, we sometimes begin with great faith but become discouraged when we focus more on the waves than on the One who has power over them. Yet the Gospel reminds us that Christ never abandons us. Whenever we call upon Him with sincere hearts, He reaches out His hand with mercy and strength.

Next weekend, our parish family will joyfully celebrate the patronal Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the heavenly patroness of our parish church building. The Assumption proclaims the glorious hope that awaits all who remain faithful to Christ. Having completed her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory, becoming the first disciple to share fully in the resurrection promised to all God’s faithful oeople.

As we prepare to celebrate our parish feast, let us ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for our parish family. May she help us to grow in faith, strengthen our hope, and deepen our love for Christ. And whenever we encounter the storms of life, may we remember the reassuring words of our Savior: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” With Mary as our guide and Christ as our Lord, we can face every challenge with confidence, knowing that the One who calmed the sea will never cease to watch over His Church.
