18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

This Sunday’s Gospel presents one of the best know miracles of Jesus: the feeding of the five thousand (Matthew 14:13-21). A great crowd follows Him into a deserted place, eager to hear His teachings and experience His healing. As evening approaches, the disciples urge Jesus to dismiss the people so they can buy food in the nearby villages. Instead, Jesus responds with a surprising command”: There is no need for them to go away, give them some food yourselves.”

The disci0ples immediately recognize the impossibility of the task. They possess only five loaves and two fish. Yet Jesus takes this small offering, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to his disciples to distributes. Not only is the crowd fed but twelve baskets of fragments remain.

This miracle points far beyond the multiplication of bread. It reveals the generous heart of God, who never abandons His people. More importantly, it foreshadows the gift of the Holy Eucharist, where Christ continues to nourish us with His own Body and Blood. Every Mass is a reminder that Jesus satisfies the deepest hunger of the human heart, not simply our physical needs, but our longing for forgiveness, hope, peace, and eternal life.

The Gospel also invited us to consider what we place into the Lord’s hands. The disciples thought their resources were inadequate. The same is true in our lives. Whether our gifts are great or small, God can accomplish extraordinary things when we entrust them to Him. A kind word, an act of forgiveness, a visit to someone who is lonely, a meal shared with a neighbor, or time spent in prayer may seem insignificant, but in Good’s hands these simple offerings become instruments of His grace.

May we approach the altar each Sunday with grateful hearts, trusting that the Lord who fed the multitude continues to provide all that we truly need. Nourished by His Word and His Eucharist, may we go forth ready to become bread for others, bringing Christ’s love and mercy to everyone we encounter.
