Sunday, November 1

All Saints/All Souls

Each year, as the Church enters the month of November, Catholics throughout the world observe two beautiful and closely connected celebrations, the solemnity of All Saints on November 1 and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, commonly known as All Souls Day, on November 2. Together, these sacred days remind us of the Church’s enduring belief in the Communion of Saints, the promise of eternal life, and the spiritual bond that unites the faithful on earth with those who have gone before us.

On All Saints Day, the Church rejoices in the countless men, women, and children who have entered the glory of Heaven. While we celebrate the feast days of individual saints throughout the liturgical year, this solemnity honors not only those officially canonized by the Church, but also the innumerable holy souls whose names are known to God alone. Among them are martyrs who courageously gave their lives for Christ, missionaries who carried the Gospel to distant lands, priests and religious who devoted themselves to God’s service, and ordinary mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, and faithful Christians who lived lives of quiet holiness. The saints remind us that holiness is not reserved for a select few. Rather, every baptized Christian is called to become a saint.

On November 2, the Church turns her attention in a particular way to the faithful departed, especially those souls undergoing purification in Purgatory as they prepare to enter the fullness of God’s presence. Our Catholic faith teaches that death does not destroy the bonds of love that unite us in Christ. Just as we pray for one another during our earthly lives, we continue to offer prayers for those who have died, entrusting them to the infinite mercy of God. While the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the greatest prayer we can offer for the departed, visiting the graves of loves ones, placing flowers, lighting candles, and offering prayers are also beautiful expressions of our Christian hope.

As we observe these sacred days, may we renew our determination to live holy lives, cherish the memory of those who have gone before us, and place our trust in the promise of the Resurrection.
