Mary’s Helper was initiated in 2008 by Sr. Sue Ann Steves and a group of volunteers from Prince of Peace Parish-Assumption of the BVM Church. They felt there was a need to be of assistance to low income and needy families in the Steelton and surrounding areas.
They are a viable organization in the Steelton area and have proven to be of assistance to families who are in need of food and clothing. They purchase their food supplies, personal care items and cleaning supplies from the Central PA food Bank at a discounted price. The Pantry has received grants in the past from Matthew-25 (Diocese of Harrisburg) as well as the Department of Agriculture and the US Government.
The Pantry, also, receives donations of food from our local grocery stores and parishioners and friends of Prince of Peace Parish.
They promote educational programs regarding healthy nutrition, food safety and easy food preparation for the families.
Every Thanksgiving and Christmas the Pantry distributes turkeys and/or hams with all the trimmings to their clientele.
The Pantry is supervised by Prince of Peace Parish along with multiple volunteers who shop for the food and stock the pantry.
The Pantry is open three Tuesdays per month (two morning sessions and one evening session). The staff is always available for anyone in emergent need of food or clothing.
