The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” (John 2:19)
Established early in the 4th century, the Lateran Basilica is the oldest church in Rome and serves as the “Pope’s Cathedral” as the seat of the bishop of Rome. Imagine, for a moment, all that those ancient stone walls have seen They have witnessed popes, saints and generations of the faithful gathering together to celebrate the eucharist, mourn at funerals and rejoice at weddings and baptisms. It stands as a lasting symbol of the strength and stability of the Church in an ever-changing world.
But even such a building pales in comparision to the glory and power of the One for whom it was build. Buildings–even the most revered–come and go with the ages. But our resurrected King and Savior stands forever upon the ruins of the earth. He is never to be destroyed, ever-alive, ever-ready to come to our aid. He lives and reigns. And know us by name.
Jesus, be the lasting cornerstone of my life.
